HBXL Xcellence Award Winner October 2007

Paul O’Gorman, this month’s proud recipient of HBXL’s Xcellence award, has built a formidable reputation for quality workmanship over the last twenty years.
Set up in two decades ago, POG Building Contractors started off as a one man band with just a little orange fiesta van and cement mixer. 20 years on, Paul O’Gorman has established himself and his business as one of the most reputable across the Wirral, where he and his small team concentrate on general building work such as extensions and loft conversions.
With around 80% of his work coming through referrals, it is easy to see why Paul has established such a good reputation. But its not just happy customers who think he does a good job with POG Building Contractors having scooped the prestigious North West FMB Heavenly Builder Award in 2006.
So why has he been so successful?
For Paul, its all about honesty and making sure he listens to what a customer wants. In addition, his wife Sonia, who looks after all the books, says Paul has a very easy disposition which means customers can relate to him and help build a good rapport.
In addition, before Paul starts work for anyone, he always encourages potential customers to take a look at previous jobs. Paul said “Its great to receive recognition from a magazine like Professional Builder, Our motto is ‘Building on Reputation’ and we pride ourselves on doing just that.
“We strive to go the extra mile for our customers, making sure that everything is done to their expectations and we are confident we do just that.
“We also have some very loyal customers who have us back again to carry out further work such as another extension, and, because of our reputation, some customers are even prepared to join the waiting list which can be as far as a year ahead.
“If a customer changes their mind half way through the job then we’ll listen and do what they want. Naturally we’ll come out with our own suggestions but its all down to trust and coming up to a logical conclusion.
“Unfortunately, the media in general tends to focus more on the negative aspect of the building industry so its great to demonstrate that there are allot of excellent builders out there who do a great job.”
