HBXL 2006 Awards: Builders’ Better Halves (April)
Sending invoices, chasing payments, balancing the books and putting together quotes and estimates are things that many builders don’t particularly look forward to. That is why this month’s winner is the ‘Lynne’ch pin of W. Greer Builders.
William Greer, who runs a small business in Preston – W. Greer Builders – is thankful that his wife, Lynne, is on hand to make sure the accounts are up to speed and the business has a healthy cash flow.
A bricklayer by trade, William set up his business 29 years ago and has enjoyed a full order book ever since he started. His work has taken him around the country where he and his colleagues build extensions, carry out property repairs and build one-off houses and properties.
But according to William, if Lynne hadn’t come on board 10 years ago to help with the admin and financial side of the business, they wouldn’t be in the strong position they are today.
Reputation
William said: “Lynne has been an enormous help and has been instrumental in making sure the business has been a success. Having her around knowing that invoices are being paid for and payments are made, takes an enormous weight off my mind. This means I can get on with the work we quote for and focus on building a good reputation for the business.
“Lynne provides vital support for the business and I’m pleased that, through this promotion, there’s a way to reward her and say thanks. I’m delighted Lynne has been recognized for all her hard work and hope more people come forward to nominate potential winners.”
For Lynne, who is a busy mum and full-time purchase ledger, helping out with the administration of the business is like water off a duck’s back!
Lynne said: “I absolutely love getting involved. William is a bit of perfectionist when it comes to his work, so if I can help out and free him up by making sure all the books are balanced, it means he can do a good job for the customers and not worry about invoices and paperwork.
“I’m now getting more involved with the estimating side of the business in that William gives me the dimensions and I get on with producing the quote. It again means less time in the office for William and more time on site.
“It’s nice to receive something for the work I do, although it’s not the intention to receive awards. I hope all the hard work brings in more work for the business.”
