Builders Better Halves. They say every cloud has a silver lining

When Dawn Leak’s husband was made redundant, she saw it as an opportunity. We meet the second winner in our new competition, in association with HBXL.

When Morley-based builder Barrie Leak was made redundant about three years ago, he and his wife Dawn decided that the time was right for them to set up their own building business – The Betta Builda Company.

To say it was one of their better decisions is perhaps a bit of an understatement, as the company now has a turnover in the region of £400-£500K and employs 10 local people.

Barrie said: “We always wanted to start our own business but because we were both employed there never seemed to be a right time to start. Being made redundant really was the catalyst for setting up the company and we’ve never looked back since.

“Dawn has been a real inspiration working behind the scenes and without her help and systematic approach I’d be in a right muddle.

“I’m sure there are a lot of women out there who provide vital support for their husband’s businesses, but never get any credit for what they do. I’m delighted Dawn has been recognised for all her hard work.”

Financial Guru

For Dawn, who has been involved with the business from the very beginning, the decision to go it alone was the right thing to do. Her role includes sorting out the company finances, producing accurate estimates using EstimatorXpress and making sure the financial and administrative side of the business is right up to date.

Before setting up the business Dawn worked as a quality consultant, providing advice for local colleges and education bodies on improving standards. She also holds a civil engineering certificate so had a bit of background knowledge of the building industry.

Dawn said: “I absolutely love my job. Running our business really fits into our lifestyle. Not only are we in charge and, therefore, make the decisions, but it has given me real flexibility. And when you’ve got three children to look after, that’s a real bonus.”

With three children and two Labrador dogs, her time is certainly used to the maximum, but when they can the couple enjoy going for long walks, watching Leeds play football and going to local gigs.

Dawn added: “Although we didn’t set up the business to win awards it’s nice to receive this accolade. I hope it will encourage more women to come forward for nomination as I’m sure there are loads more out there who, just like me, work behind the scenes.”
