What's been going on?
As part of our CSR policy (Corporate Social Responsibility) we aim is to be a responsible business committed to building a sustainable future for people and planet. Each month, we'll round up what we have been doing at HBXL and around the UK.

Hair today gone tomorrow
November 2011
The staff at HBXL have been busy raising money for good causes. As you may be aware November is now known as Movember and following Sales Director, Keith Place efforts last year, more staff decided to grow moustaches during the month for charity. I think you will agree their efforts are admiral.
And while some staff where growing their hair others were having it removed, Tom Brookes from our technical support team decided to have his chest and back waxed for children in need check out his efforts in the link below – Ouch !

WorldSkills London 2011
October2011
HBXL are excited to be involved in this year’s WorldSkills event in London, this is the largest event of its kind in Europe helping young people to explore and better understand how skills shape their world and how vocational training can help them achieve their dreams.
HBXL will be exhibiting on the FMB stand. We are keen to encourage young people to consider a career in construction and as part of the exhibition HBXL have designed a house using our Planxpress software which delegates will get the opportunity to recreate using model bricks.
If you are going to the event come and visit us, say hello and have a go at building our house!

Congratulations
September 2011
Scarlett Franklin was welcomed to the team as a full time employee following completion of her 8 week internship with HBXL.
Scarlett says: “I was really lucky to find a suitable internship opportunity as soon as my exams finished. I was eager to start and throw myself into the workplace to get experience. I have been able to use the skills picked up at university and transfer these to the workplace, skills such as organisation, time management and presentation have already been proved invaluable.”

5k runs, work experiences and refurbishments
July 2011
Phew! July was a busy month at HBXL.
Our new apprentice Natalie Jefferies showed us her sporty side. The staff at HBXL sponsored Natalie to take part in the Teenage Cancer Trust 5k run. The event was organised by Natalie’s close friend 18 year old Chelsie, who has recently been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
So far £2,757.00 has been raised by their team for the charity, which is devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer.
Sam Wild – Work Experience
Sam Wild joined the Marketing department, assisting Gareth with our social networking sites and email marketing. Sam who starts Art College in September said “the experience has given me a great grounding for this and a feel of what a working environment is like”.
Cross bow Pre-School Refurbishment
Crossbow Pre-School is at the heart of the community in Frampton Cotterell and was originally set up over 30 years ago by the FC&DC association, in order to provide pre-school care and education for the children of the village and surrounding areas.
They have been tirelessly fundraising to raise money to enable them to renovate the hall and improve facilities for children and staff.
92% of the costs were raised by the fundraising alone and HBXL were very pleased to be able to help towards this total with our donation of £100.

Scarlett Franklin – UWE Graduate Internship scheme
June 2011
Scarlett Franklin has recently graduated from the University of West of England with a degree in architectural technology. She has joined HBXL development team as an Intern Research Analyst. Scarlett will be looking into sustainable technologies and materials.
Green Build Expo - Manchester
Scarlett recently attended the GreenBuild Expo in Manchester with Chris Loving also from our development team. This event promotes sustainability in the construction industry and both Scarlett and Chris found it very useful in helping them develop and tailor our software for more sustainable construction.

The “New” Apprentice
May 2011
Natalie Jefferies was welcomed to the team this month. Natalie is undertaking an NVQ in Business & Administration and is an excellent addition to the HBXL team. She is currently supporting the Business Operations Manager with Sales processing and administration tasks as well as John and Ed in the Tech team, by assisting with incoming customer calls. Natalie said “ working at HBXL is interesting and I have learnt lots of new thing.”
OX5 RUN – Run for Oxford Children’s Hospital
March 2011
The annual Oxford Run is organised to raise funds for the Oxford Children’s hospital. This year HBXL is sponsoring Michael Holmes whose daughter was treated at the hospital after she was diagnosed with a hearing impediment. So impressed with the exceptional care she received, Michael is keen to raise money for the charity event which last year raised over £57,000.
Good luck to Michael and all the other competitors and let’s hope we can exceed last year’s target!
Energy saving
February 2011
February sees a real focus in our office towards energy saving around the office to raise awareness of climate change and our carbon footprint. Our staff realise that by making simple changes we can do our part in reducing wasted energy and our carbon footprint.
So far we have implemented a ‘lights off’ policy for unattended rooms and close of business, all IT equipment to be shutdown and not left on standby overnight, an increase in webinars for our customers instead of face-to-face demonstrations – to cut down on travelling to our offices. We aim to work towards more ways to save energy…update to follow…
Charity collection
January 2011
Our employees were asked to bring in all unwanted items of clothing and bric-a-brac, which was then deposited at the office’s local St Peter’s Hospice shop.
St Peter’s Hospice is Bristol’s only adult hospice caring for local people with life-limiting illnesses. Our commitment is to improve the quality of life of patients while extending care and support to their families and loved ones.
Lord Mayors Appeal brings festive cheer to children
December 2010
The Lord Mayors Appeal is aimed at raising enough money to give Christmas presents to more than 1,500 underprivileged Bristol children and is expected to raise up to £45,000 to buy toys and clothes for children who would otherwise not receive any gifts.
This year we have donated £50 towards this very worthy appeal and hope to bring some happiness to underprivileged children in our local community.

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men's health.
Keith Place – Director of sales has taken part in Movember this year and his team has raised over £3000 for the cause which funds are directed to The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research.

As an ex- West Ham and Dagenham and Redbridge player Lee has organised this match to support charities including Sports Connections, Coaching for hope and SOS Children’s villages. Lee now runs a successful Building company – Oakleafe Property Services Ltd and is a user of our software packages, so we were very pleased to sponsor this event and support these children’s charities.
